Essential oils and breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a special moment between a mother and her child, but it can also raise many questions for the young mother. The use of cosmetics containing essential oils during breastfeeding is often criticized. We constantly hear and read that they are forbidden for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Let’s clarify this!
What are essential oils?
An essential oil is the volatile aromatic essence extracted from a plant. The essence is the substance naturally produced by a plant. Only aromatic plants produce essences. Essential oils can be extracted from different parts of the plant: leaves, flowers, stems, bark, roots. Despite their name, they contain no fatty substances. A drop of essential oil evaporates without leaving a greasy stain. To use them correctly, they must be well known and understood. In cosmetics, essential oils are used both for their intrinsic care properties (soothing, astringent, purifying) and/or as fragrance substances. Depending on the formulation, they can also contribute to the preservation of the product.
Essential oils and breastfeeding
In everyday cosmetic products (shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, cream, lotion), the quantities of essential oils are so minimal that they have no harmful effect on the baby. These products can therefore be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
