Lice and hair: complete guide and action plan to get rid of them for good!

Happy to see each other again after the summer holidays, children are overjoyed: playing, hugging, sharing cuddly toys… A real treat for lice, who take the opportunity to jump from head to head and invade the entire class. Back home, they rush into mum or dad’s arms for a welcome-home hug… and BOOM, you’re under siege too, along with the rest of the household.

Lice and nits are formidable invaders: they spread in the blink of an eye and are not easy to dislodge. But fortunately, there are natural treatments to eliminate lice quickly and effectively.

In this guide, we take a closer look at these unwanted little creatures: How are lice transmitted? What are the symptoms of lice infestation? What are the health risks of lice in children and adults? Our tips for avoiding lice, and finally, how to get rid of them quickly and prevent them from coming back.

What are lice, and what are the risks of infestation?

Lice are small, wingless parasites that live mainly in human hair. There are several types, such as head lice (pediculosis), body lice, and pubic lice. Head lice are the most common in children and spread easily through sharing personal items or direct contact.

The good news: a lice infestation generally does not pose a serious health risk. However, it often causes very irritating itching and damage to the scalp from repeated scratching. In some cases, this can lead to secondary infections. That’s why it’s essential to take action quickly at the first signs, to prevent spreading and to relieve discomfort.

How are lice transmitted?

Lice are mainly spread through direct head-to-head contact. During play, hugs, or any moments of close proximity, they can move from one scalp to another in an instant. Transmission can also occur via contaminated objects. Sharing items such as hairbrushes, towels, helmets, pillows… in short, anything that comes into contact with hair, can spread lice.

Lice do not fly or jump; they move slowly along the scalp. However, close and repeated contact allows them to easily pass from one head to another. This need for proximity explains why nurseries, schools, or group activities are common places for infestation. Through play, hugs, and sharing objects, children can easily pass these little creatures to each other.

The family unit is therefore, logically, also a prime environment for transmission. Generally, when a child catches lice at nursery, school, or during an extracurricular activity, they bring them home, and no family member is safe. Adults can also catch lice if their child is infested.

Note: Contrary to popular belief, lice have nothing to do with poor hygiene. Anyone can catch them, whether the hair is clean or dirty.

How to properly check for the presence of lice

The best way to check is through a careful inspection of the scalp using a lice comb. Seat your child in good lighting and part the hair, section by section. If lice are present, they will be on the scalp, and are generally easier to spot behind the ears.

If combing doesn’t reveal anything, still examine the scalp visually. As explained above, there may also be nits, which don’t always come out with the comb.

At the slightest doubt, carry out a preventive treatment. We recommend checking your children’s hair once a week during high-risk periods, such as the start of the school year. The earlier the problem is detected, the sooner it can be solved.

How to effectively get rid of lice

Oh no, you’ve found lice and/or nits in your children’s hair. One of the first things to do is inform the school or daycare. There’s no shame in it; it happens to everyone. To eradicate lice, it’s necessary to treat all people and all objects that may have been contaminated. Lice are highly invasive, and if everything and everyone is not properly treated, the result is an endless, vicious cycle of re-infestation.

It is therefore important to inform the school so they can anonymously alert other students. On your side, it is essential to treat your entire family. If one member is infested, the whole family is at risk.

Anti-lice shampoo: the best solution?

By reflex, we often turn to an anti-lice shampoo from the pharmacy or supermarket. Packed with pesticides and ultra-powerful chemicals, it is indeed effective, but it is also highly harmful to the scalp and to your children’s health, especially for very young ones.

In addition to the obvious toxicity of pesticides for your child’s body, it’s not uncommon to see side effects such as scalp and hair irritation, or allergic reactions. In some cases, these aggressive anti-lice shampoos can even cause neurological disorders.

So, yes, anti-lice shampoo is effective, but at what cost? Fortunately, there are natural alternatives that are just as effective and much more respectful of your child’s health.

The anti-lice oil treatment: a healthy and reliable solution

Performing an anti-lice hair oil treatment is a very effective solution that respects your child’s health and delicate scalp. It carries no risk and can be repeated as often as necessary without causing irritation or poisoning, unlike chemical treatments..

How to make this natural anti-lice treatment

This natural anti-lice treatment is very easy to prepare and apply. You will need a lice comb, an applicator bottle (included with the purchase of the oil on our website), Hairborist Repair oil, and the Plantapoux synergy.

  1. In the applicator bottle, mix 20 ml of Repair with 10 drops of Plantapoux. (Adjust the total quantity according to your child’s hair thickness and length.)
  2. Carefully apply the mixture to the entire scalp, then distribute the remainder along the lengths.
  3. Leave on for 1 hour.
  4. Comb the hair with the lice comb. As long as you are still collecting lice, keep combing.
  5. Wash the hair twice in a row with a gentle shampoo.
  6. Repeat the process every 2 days for 2 weeks.

Why it works?

The oil treatment works through two complementary mechanisms. On one hand, vegetable oils create a mechanical barrier, while essential oils provide a natural repellent action against lice. The synergy of these two approaches makes the treatment both highly effective at eliminating existing lice and preventive in avoiding their return.

Vegetable oils coat the hair and scalp, forming a protective layer. This deprives the lice of oxygen, causing them to suffocate. As they lose their grip, they become easier to remove with a fine-tooth comb. In addition, by making the hair shaft smoother, the oil helps nits slide off and reduces their adhesion, preventing lice from reattaching.

Essential oils, particularly those contained in the Plantapoux formula, have repellent and purifying properties. Ingredients such as tea tree, spearmint, or lavender are renowned for their effectiveness against lice, acting as natural barriers that keep these parasites away.

This double action, mechanical through vegetable oils and repellent through essential oils, makes this treatment a highly effective solution, while remaining gentle on the scalp and safe for both children and adults.

Better safe than sorry!

After a lice alert at school or following a thorough inspection, if you see that your child doesn’t seem to be infested, or if you simply want to avoid the problem right from the start of the school year, it’s a good idea to carry out a preventive treatment.

With products like Repair or Plantapoux, which make the hair smoother and more slippery, lice and their nits have a harder time clinging on. In addition, essential oils have a scent that repels lice, making your children’s hair less attractive to these parasites and limiting their spread.

Prevention really is the best way to avoid an infestation, all while protecting the health of the scalp.
