Shea butter mask for hair: repairs and moisturizes
Where does shea butter come from?
Shea butter (also known as Karite) is made from the oil of the shea nut. This kernel fruit grows on the Shea nut tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) and can take up to 50 years to mature. This vulnerable tree is from the Sapotaceae family (Butyrospermum parkii,) and is indigenous to the wooded savannas of West and Central Africa. The tree has an impressive lifespan – up to 300 years! From as young as 25 years, a tree may produce a fruit capacity ranging from 15 to 20 kg.
The shea nut resembles a very large almond (the size of a plum) with a nutty kernel inside. The shell is then removed leaving the kernel to be crushed, roasted, and ground into a paste to extract the shea butter.
What can a shea butter mask do for your hair?
Naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E and F it makes for a wonderful hair care product with nourishing and protective qualities. Thanks to fatty-rich nutrients and moisturizing and repairing agents, it is often used to treat dry and damaged hair as they deeply hydrate the hair. Being high fatty acids and esters makes it incredibly strengthening, moisturizing, and protective, particularly against hard water and aggressive detergents.
A protective mask for hair
Chemical hair colorants, pollution, wind, sun, the list goes on: our hair is constantly exposed to aggressive external factors. As an oil-rich nut, shea is commonly used in cosmetics for its extraordinary moisture-locking properties. A hair mask, therefore, has all the natural vitamins to condition and treat your hair. A hair mask will quench, feed, and soften strands to bring it back to its original health. Take care when selecting a hair mask, however. If you have the option, select a product that comes from certified organic agricultural methods.
