Why choose a fragrance-free shampoo to protect your hair?

Scents, whether pleasant or unpleasant, are part of our daily lives. Smelling comforting and enjoyable fragrances activates the brain’s reward circuit, providing us with a genuine feeling of well-being. Many cosmetic brands take advantage of this mechanism by adding fragrance agents to nearly all their products. Honey creams, almond shower gels, citrus shampoos, lavender body lotions… Attracted by pleasant scents, we are often guided by them when making purchases.

Unfortunately, not all of these fragrances in cosmetics and hair products are harmless. In fact, they can trigger skin allergies, particularly on the scalp. The solution to protect your skin and hair? Choosing a fragrance-free shampoo and hair care products without irritating agents, but not necessarily without any smell. Let’s take a closer look.

What are the risks linked to fragrance agents?

There are different types of skin allergies: atopic dermatitis, which mainly affects children, as well as eczema and urticaria. In France, around 4.2% of adults seen by dermatologists are allergic, and more than 18% report suffering from eczema. These allergic reactions are caused by contact with irritating or allergenic substances, such as fragrance. According to the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), about 1 to 3% of the European population is allergic to fragrance ingredients.

Not all fragrance substances are allergens, but unfortunately many are. The SCCS has identified 54 fragrance agents as contact allergens in humans. That means you’ve probably already been in contact with one of these allergens when using cosmetic products. In fact, fragrance blends in everyday products can contain hundreds of different aromatic ingredients… enough to make your head spin!

Even if you are not allergic, these substances can still cause irritation when used in high concentrations. Itchy skin, redness, discomfort… To avoid such allergies or skin irritations, the best option remains using fragrance-free cosmetics and shampoos.

What are the benefits of fragrance-free shampoo?

When you choose a fragrance-free shampoo, you automatically avoid allergies and irritations caused by perfume. That’s already a big advantage! This type of shampoo is much gentler and better tolerated by your hair. It is perfectly suitable for people with allergies, reactive skin, or a sensitive scalp.

In addition to being free from fragrance agents, fragrance-free shampoos are generally much healthier and more natural, especially when they are labeled organic. These formulas are typically free from silicones or parabens, harsh agents that can damage your hair. Of course, it’s always important to check the composition of your organic fragrance-free shampoo. You can consult websites like The truth about cosmetics and use their INCI search tool to double-check the ingredients.

This research can also be very useful to ensure that your hypoallergenic fragrance-free shampoo is truly fragrance-free. As surprising as it may sound, some shampoos marketed as “fragrance-free” still contain added scents. Why? Because some raw ingredients used in shampoos can have a naturally unpleasant smell, and manufacturers sometimes add fragrance agents to mask it. If you see “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label, that’s a red flag , but you can also search specific ingredients in the INCI tool mentioned above to be sure your product is really free from fragrance.

Fragrance-free shampoo = odorless shampoo?

It can be hard to give up the pleasant scents that are part of our daily lives, especially when we take time for a relaxing self-care ritual. After all, what’s better than washing your hair with gentle notes of lavender or almond that tickle the senses? The idea of using a shampoo with no smell at all might not sound very appealing. But does fragrance-free shampoo really mean it has no scent?

To create a shampoo, manufacturers can use synthetic fragrances, which, as we’ve seen, aren’t always recommended, but they can also opt for natural aromas. These come from essential oils, botanical extracts, or plant-based molecules. That’s the case with our Hairborist shampoos, which contain no synthetic fragrances but are enriched with captivating essential oils.

So yes, it’s absolutely possible to avoid irritating perfume agents while still enjoying a shampoo that smells delicately and naturally pleasant!

Buying your fragrance-free shampoo at the pharmacy: good or bad idea?

Now that you know how to choose a shampoo without synthetic fragrance, the next question is: where can you find the ideal product? Buying a fragrance-free shampoo in the supermarket is rarely a good idea, since you’ll spend a lot of time deciphering labels among hundreds of options. The same applies when purchasing your fragrance-free shampoo at the pharmacy. While the pharmacy may seem reassuring at first glance, you’ll still need to scan each label carefully to find the right product. The perfect shampoo should be free from synthetic fragrances but also certified organic to ensure it’s as natural as possible. After all, there’s no point in avoiding perfume agents if the product is full of parabens or silicones!

At Hairborist, we make things easier by offering fragrance-free shampoos certified organic by Ecogarantie, the strictest label in the European Union. Our shampoos are free from petrochemicals and GMOs, formulated with the healthiest possible natural ingredients, including plants and essential oils.

If you’re looking for a shampoo with absolutely no fragrance, we’ve also developed a formula specifically designed for sensitive and/or allergy-prone scalps. Sensity shampoo contains no perfume and no essential oils; it’s completely neutral and gently cleanses your scalp. The ideal solution to avoid any risk of irritation!

Whatever your scalp condition or sensitivity, a fragrance-free, paraben-free shampoo is always the best choice to wash your hair gently. This doesn’t prevent you from using a naturally scented product with essential oils, for example. Either way: no more allergies, no more irritation, your skin will thank you!
